Every one of the sites I build is customized to my clients' needs. I am not tied to any one CMS platform or e-commerce shopping cart, and I also do not use out-of-the-box templates.
Below are a few of the most common terms you will hear when you start to research websites. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. I do not charge to answer questions.
CMS or WCM (Web Content Management System) is the collaborative authoring for websites and may include text and embed graphics, photos, video, audio, maps, and program code that display content and interact with the user. Content Management System allows you to update content instead of relying on a web master or web developer to do it for you. Many off the shelf CMS have a large learning curve, you might spend more time learning it than it would take to pay a professional to do it for you.
Electronic commerce is the activity of electronically buying or selling of products or services over the Internet. E-Commerce is also known as a shopping cart. There are three areas of e-commerce: online retailing, electronic markets, and online auctions.
Domain names are a key part of the Internet infrastructure. They provide a human-readable address for any web server available on the Internet. Any Internet-connected computer can be reached through a public IP address, either an IPv4 address (e.g. 173.194.121.32) or an IPv6 address (e.g., 2027:0da8:8b73:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:1337). Computers can handle such addresses easily, but people have a hard time finding out who's running the server or what service the website offers. IP addresses are hard to remember and might change over time. To solve all those problems we use human-readable addresses called domain names.
A web application firewall (WAF) is a specific form of application firewall that filters, monitors, and blocks HTTP traffic to and from a web service. By inspecting HTTP traffic, it can prevent attacks exploiting a web application's known vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), file inclusion, and improper system configuration.
Once your site is built, it needs to live on a server that can be found easily by all internet users. Hosting is usually paid for monthly or yearly, and you may also need an SSL and or a Firewall to protect your site.
On July 1, 2018, Google started to penalize sites without an SSL certificate when it comes to search result ranking. If you do not have an SSL your site will rank lower than your competitor that does.
SEO means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in a search engine. The better your site's visibility your page/site has in search results, the more likely you will garner the attention and attract prospective customers to your business. SEO is a never-ending process, and when planning a website, SEO is most likely your biggest budgeted item. The major search engines constantly change their algorithms to serve the user the best, most relevant content. Google has dictated that all websites MUST be mobile-friendly first. Mobile-friendly first means your site must render correctly, function perfectly, and be as accessible on mobile devices as on desktop computers, or it will not rank over your competitor's site that does do all this correctly.
An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a security protocol that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser.
Refers to the aesthetic design of websites. The look and feel. How the colors used throughout the site, work with your brand. Web design also dictates how the site will look on all devices and platforms. This is a one-time fee that is done every time the site's look and feel need to be refreshed. A typical website design has a shelf life of approximately 2-4 years.
This refers to the layout of your site. UXA is how the user interacts with the elements and where the pieces are on the page. How easy the site is to use and how intuitive it is. UXA is usually lumped in with the design process for small to medium-sized companies, but for large companies, or companies with large complex sites, this could be a stand-alone service or fee.
