SEO means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in a search engine. The better your site's visibility your page/site has in search results, the more likely you will garner the attention and attract prospective customers to your business.
info
If you receive an email from someone stating they can get you to the first page on Google, it is a half-truth. Yes, if you have an unlimited budget, you can be first on Google, but if you are like most people in the real world, you can not afford $25k a month or more to be first on Google.
warning
SEO is not a set it and forget it part of your website, and it is something that needs to change and evolve constantly. Search engines continuously change their criteria and algorithms to serve the freshest, most relevant content available.

The Call Concierge was one of the biggest projects I have done. It started with the client requesting I created wireframes for their product. This quickly snowballed into a complete design and build. The deadline was extremely small, but the project was a complete success.

Website terms you need to know

Below are a few of the most common terms you will hear when you start to research websites. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. I do not charge to answer questions.

CMS (Content Management System)

CMS or WCM (Web Content Management System) is the collaborative authoring for websites and may include text and embed graphics, photos, video, audio, maps, and program code that display content and interact with the user. Content Management System allows you to update content instead of relying on a web master or web developer to do it for you. Many off the shelf CMS have a large learning curve, you might spend more time learning it than it would take to pay a professional to do it for you.

info
The added expense of a CMS/WCM can easily out way the cost of paying a professional to do occasional minor edits. A CMS/WCM is only beneficial when you are blogging or posting on a weekly or daily schedule.

Domain Name

Domain names are a key part of the Internet infrastructure. They provide a human-readable address for any web server available on the Internet. Any Internet-connected computer can be reached through a public IP address, either an IPv4 address (e.g. 173.194.121.32) or an IPv6 address (e.g., 2027:0da8:8b73:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:1337). Computers can handle such addresses easily, but people have a hard time finding out who's running the server or what service the website offers. IP addresses are hard to remember and might change over time. To solve all those problems we use human-readable addresses called domain names.

info
Pick a domain name that utilizes keywords. Ex: Blue Grey Fabrication is a company that can make anything out of plastic. I recommended adding the word plastic to their domain, which they did. This small change added a huge keyword to their domain name. By using keywords, you better help the user to understand what services you offer or what products you sell.
shopping_cart

e-Commerce

Electronic commerce is the activity of electronically buying or selling of products or services over the Internet. E-Commerce is also known as a shopping cart. There are three areas of e-commerce: online retailing, electronic markets, and online auctions.

info
Unless you are selling over $1000 a month there are better alternatives than a "shopping cart".
lock

Firewall

A web application firewall (WAF) is a specific form of application firewall that filters, monitors, and blocks HTTP traffic to and from a web service. By inspecting HTTP traffic, it can prevent attacks exploiting a web application's known vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), file inclusion, and improper system configuration.

info
DO not purchase a FIREWALL unless you absolutely need one. They are hard to manage unless you have worked with them routinely.

Hosting

Once your site is built, it needs to live on a server that can be found easily by all internet users. Hosting is usually paid for monthly or yearly, and you may also need an SSL and or a Firewall to protect your site.

On July 1, 2018, Google started to penalize sites without an SSL certificate when it comes to search result ranking. If you do not have an SSL your site will rank lower than your competitor that does.

info
Save money by paying in advance for as many years as possible. Many web developers will not work on a site not hosted on a server they can easily access. Always check with your developer before purchasing hosting. Many hosting companies provide a FREE SSL with your monthly/yearly hosting.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a security protocol that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser.

warning
Google said nobody wants to experience a drop in search rankings in Google or a negative impact on their business or online reputation. Without SSL, this is likely to happen.
info
Many hosting companies provide a FREE SSL with your monthly/yearly hosting.

Web Design

Refers to the aesthetic design of websites. The look and feel. How the colors used throughout the site, work with your brand. Web design also dictates how the site will look on all devices and platforms. This is a one-time fee that is done every time the site's look and feel need to be refreshed. A typical website design has a shelf life of approximately 2-4 years.

warning
Google has dictated that all websites MUST be mobile-friendly first. This means your site must render properly, function perfectly, and be as accessible on mobile devices or it will not rank over your competitor's site that does do all this properly.
info
You can save money by using a WYSIWYG website builder, but your site will not have that professionally polished look to it.
code

Web Development

This is the code that makes all the elements on your site work with each other to get the user the information they seek. Web development makes your site look and work properly on desktops, tablets, laptops, and mobile devices. Web development is a one-time fee for the initial build and a minimum ongoing cost for changes and updates.

info
Developers must make all sites look/work on all devices (Desktop Computers, Laptops, Tablets, and phones). Starting July 1, 2019, Google enabled mobile-first indexing for all new websites.

UXA (User Experience Architecture)

This refers to the layout of your site. UXA is how the user interacts with the elements and where the pieces are on the page. How easy the site is to use and how intuitive it is. UXA is usually lumped in with the design process for small to medium-sized companies, but for large companies, or companies with large complex sites, this could be a stand-alone service or fee.

info
UXA is the same as having a blue print done before you build your house. Paying for wireframes will save you money in the long run.
